Nineteenth-Century Artists: Themes and New Discoveries

Galleria d'Arte Moderna

A major exhibition that presents a large group of works by artists of the nineteenth century.

Within the Roman artistic scene in the second half of the 19th century and the first twenty years of the 20th century, the most popular genre of easel painting was landscape. A radical shift in this direction was triggered primarily by Nino Costa, a great painter and patriot, and the point of reference for many artists working in Rome.

Among its collections, the Gallery of Modern Art of Roma Capitale hosts a limited but important body of artwork by 19th century Italian artists from northern Italy, particularly from the Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria and Veneto regions.

Within the history of 19th century Italian art, Neapolitan painting played a leading role. A significant contribution to the development of the landscape genre was made in Naples by the Dutch painter Anton Sminck van Pitloo, who took on a teaching position at the Naples Academy of Fine Arts in 1816.
